Position Overview

This role is designed to build one’s readiness to lead their own classroom. The Resident Teacher is paired with the teacher as a way to:

  • See exemplary instructional practice in action

  • Receive immediate and actionable feedback on their own practice

  • Provide structured release time so that the coach may leave the classroom to support others

The Resident Teacher will work closely with the assigned teacher to plan lessons, provide instruction, and to support the overall academic and social-emotional growth and development of the students. Throughout the year, the Resident Teacher will gradually assume increasing teaching responsibilities and will receive continuous feedback from their teacher with the end goal of transitioning into a Lead Teacher position the following school year.

All job responsibilities are in partnership with the assigned teacher.

Instruction 90%

  • Implement the DS Model
  • Facilitate whole class and small group learning opportunities using identified curriculum, resources, strategies, and assessments
  • Deliver strong instruction, independently and in cooperation with teacher, that requires that students hold the cognitive lift and are deeply engaged in the learning
  • Use core instructional tools to co-design, prepare and deliver dynamic lesson aligned to grade-level standards that engage students in rigorous learning experiences
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to support special education students behaviorally and academically according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • Assist in the maintenance of inventory of all instructional materials
  • Help maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development
  • Support administration with analysis of assessments that monitor progress to inform and design appropriate response/strategies, making adjustments as needed to support students in mastering grade level standards
  • Participate in the assessment of students daily, weekly, and at the ends of units and analyze assessment data through campus and network wide systems
  • Actively participate in the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process in order to ensure that the needs of all learners are being met
  • Support students in improving methods and habits of study
  • Meet all lesson planning requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned by teacher

Professional Learning 10%

  • Participate in all informal and formal observations as determined by the school principal or designee
  • Participate in all required staff meetings, committee meetings, and work sessions
  • Actively participate in all team planning and data analysis meetings
  • Engage in ongoing personal professional learning - exploring educational research, enrolling in college courses, participating in both DS-facilitated and external professional development opportunities
  • Seek out and be receptive to feedback
  • Meet all other requirements with partnering program

Requirements (minimum)

Education: Associate’s Degree and willing to work towards a Bachelors

Qualifications

  • Valid Professional Educator License or equivalent in state of employment (IL or MI) - OR - Proof of enrollment in a Teacher Preparation Program
  • Valid Substitute Permit in state of employment (IL or MI)
  • Technology demands:
    • Proficient with cloud based software solutions (such as GoogleSuite)
    • Ability to learn digital tools and programs as needed for the position
  • Travel as required for training, professional development, and collaboration

Physical demands: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing
